The Power Of Walking Away

I want to share a story today that might help you walk away from something that's not working for you.

This is so important because in a culture that applauds hustle and energetic output, walking away can feel like a total failure.

Last week, I taught at my first in-person conference in over three years! It reminded me of a video of my niece June receiving her first cochlear implant.

You've probably seen these transformative videos, where the baby is living in it's own world, then becomes agitated with the new accessory, and finally is overcome with the sound of their parents voice and the world at large.  We think of this scene as a miracle, but hearing new sounds and lots of them can be very overwhelming.

In fact, people who use hearing aids are often encouraged to take "withdrawal breaks" because the world can be very LOUD.  I've experienced this with my niece - giving her breaks to just chill out & recalibrate while everyone is yapping away around her.  And while I'm not hearing impaired, I totally understand the benefit of stepping back from a loud and boisterous environment.

Inherently, conferences are energetic marathons and your girl was NOT prepared.  It's taken me the full week to recover from small talk, taking classes, digesting info and teaching.  I've needed to withdraw - hardcore!  But amidst that pumping music, rapid-fire information and interpersonal energy, I realized something important:

My work has evolved considerably in the past 3 years and I don't know that the conference venue is the best container for my movement teaching... 😳 This one is a big pill to swallow, but one that also affirms that an environment with constant distractions is not always primed for a deep dive.

Sometimes it is what it is... Over the next few weeks, I'm assessing whether or not I'll offer an in-person workshop or weekend course this year, or simply continue offering my courses and content in the virtual venue. No matter the answer, I know that the work will tell me where it wants to live.  This is the benefit of working in partnership with the muse of movement - it already knows where it will thrive - you just have to listen in :).

If you've been feeling like your movement or teaching practice hasn't quite been a good fit for the space you've been doing it in, it might be time for a shift.  Remember that the venue can, indeed, be wrong for the event.  Imagine a vegan tasting menu in the middle of a steakhouse - y'know?  Whether it's with the health of your movement practice or your teaching, I'm here to help - shoot me an email and we can set up a time to talk about what might be helpful!

And now for some EXCITING news.  Scroll down to see the JZ Spring Program Preview! I've had some shifts in my world that have opened me up for some new movement and mentorship experiences.  Scroll on down to learn about the next movement clinic and a new group coaching program for small business owners coming in April!

Much Love,

Jenna
